Ohio State Reports 157 New COVID-19 Cases, Adds 396 Beds To Isolation, Quarantine Housing

The Ohio State University reported an additional 157 cases of COVID-19 among students Saturday, Sept. 5.

One hundred fifty-one out of 2,542 Buckeye students tested were positive for COVID-19 across the 24-hour period of Thursday, Sept. 3. These new cases brought the cumulative number for Aug. 14-Sept. 3 to 1,376, according to Ohio State’s COVID-19 dashboard

The positivity rate in that span on Sept. 3 was 5.94 percent.

Eighty-four of 874 off-campus student residents tested were positive for COVID-19 in the same 24-hour period on Sept. 3. During that period, there is a positivity rate of 9.61 percent, down from the 11.03 percent positivity rate for Wednesday, Sept. 2, marking the lowest since the school started reporting the numbers. 

The positivity rate for students who live on campus is 4.02 percent during the 24-hour window on Sept. 3, with 67 of the 1,668 on-campus residents who were tested were positive for COVID-19. 

The 4.02 percent positivity rate is an increase from the 3.47 percent and 3.33 percent positivity rates of the prior two days [Sept. 1-2]. 

Altogether, the combined positivity rate for students during Sept 3’s 24-hour period is 5.94 percent.

Also according to Ohio State’s COVID-19 dashboard, Ohio State issued 38,187 COVID-19 tests for students from Aug. 14-Sept. 3,

Additionally, 23 out of 1,458 employees tested Aug. 1-Sept. 3 were positive for COVID-19. Tested employees have a cumulative positivity rate of 1.58 percent. 

Overall, Ohio State has had 1,399 positive COVID-19 tests.

For those students who have been exposed to the virus and/or have fallen ill from the virus, Ohio State has 858 beds for quarantine and isolation housing, though 446 are occupied. Of those 446 occupied beds, 321 students are in isolation housing and 125 are in quarantine housing.

Since last reported, Ohio State’s quarantine and isolation capacity increased by 396 beds.

Quarantine is for people who have been exposed to a disease and isolation is for people who are sick with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
