If Ohio State fans tune into B1G Tailgate — the Big Ten’s weekly gameday show during football season — they are likely to see a familiar face this year.
Former Buckeye safety Tyvis Powell is joining the program as an analyst, his first year in such a role. He’ll be alongside host Mike Hall doing on-site interviews and analysis at a different Big Ten campus each week.
Powell started for three seasons in Columbus from 2013-15, racking up 195 tackles, eight interceptions and nine pass breakups during his collegiate career. He is perhaps most remembered for his 2013 interception against Michigan on a two-point conversion try to secure a 42-41 win, as well as his game-sealing interception on Alabama’s last-second Hail Mary attempt in the 2014 College Football Playoff semifinal.
Following his collegiate days Powell signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent and played in eight games during the 2016 season. He then spent 2017 and 2018 with the San Francisco 49ers, playing in 10 contests across both those years. Powell finished his NFL career with 14 tackles and a forced fumble.
Powell starts his broadcasting career in West Lafayette, Ind. on Sept. 2 when Purdue takes on Fresno State.
