Urban Meyer may return to coaching after his retirement after the 2018 season, but his return may come at the professional level.
According to reports by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland, Meyer, the former Ohio State head coach, is considering a return to coaching, specifically at the NFL and, more specifically, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have secured the No. 1 overall pick for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Rowland’s report discusses a few key reasons why the Jaguars make sense for Meyer’s return to coaching. For one, the aformentioned top pick that will likely be used on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Past that, Meyer can return to Florida, a state in which he coached the Gators from 2005-10 and won a pair of national titles.
In Schefter’s report, he said that Meyer “intends to decide in the next week, before the NFL regular season is over, and teams expect to hear his decision in the coming days.”
Meyer coached at Ohio State from 2012-18, amassing an 83-9 record that included a national title run in the 2014 season. The Buckeyes went 54-4 in the Big Ten under Meyer’s tenure.
Even with loads of success at the collegiate level, including a record of 187-32 as a head coach across four teams, Meyer has never coached in the NFL.
The Toledo, Ohio native head coach announced he would be retiring after the 2018 Rose Bowl against Washington, and has since worked as an analyst on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff and has moved to an assistant athletic director position within Ohio State.
