Former Ohio State offensive lineman and four-year letter-winner Michael Gurr died at the age of 48 on May 7.

Gurr played for Ohio State from 1997-2000 after redshirting as a true freshman in 1996. He began his career as a tight end, but shuffled between that position and the offensive line while receiving limited playing time as a redshirt freshman.

Gurr found a home as a backup guard in 1998 and played in all 12 of Ohio State’s games that year. Gurr took a step forward as a redshirt junior and made five starts for the Buckeyes. He went on to become a starter in his final season for the Buckeyes.

Gurr capped off his career with a fumble recovery for a touchdown in Ohio State’s 24-7 loss to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl in his redshirt senior season.

Gurr was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. According to his obituary, Gurr continued to support the Buckeyes following his final season with the team.

“His love for Ohio State football remained lifelong, and Saturdays in the fall were never just games to Mike — they were tradition, passion, and family,” Gurr’s obituary read.
