Friday was set to be the day that Cleveland Shaker Heights five-star safety Trey McNutt (6-0, 180) announced his commitment, but he has decided that he needs more time to make his decision and pushed his commitment date back to Aug. 3.
McNutt is the No. 19 overall player in the class of 2025 according to 247Sports composite ranking as well as the No. 1 safety in the country and the No. 2 player in the state of Ohio. is currently choosing between the Buckeyes, Florida, Oregon, Texas A&M and USC, but now Ohio State will have more time to try to convince him to come to Columbus.
Ohio State was seen as the favorite for the five-star for much of his recruitment in the past couple of years, but had fallen enough that he didn’t take an official visit to the campus in June. He did make his way to each of the other four schools he is choosing between.
If the Buckeyes can use the extra time to their advantage and get a commitment from McNutt, he would be a big addition to what is already the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, slightly ahead of Alabama. He would join Olney (Md.) Our Lady Good Counsel four-star Faheem Delane (6-3, 195), Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic four-star DeShawn Stewart (6-2, 185) and Cleveland St. Ignatius four-star Cody Haddad (6-1, 175) in the safety group of the Buckeyes 2025 class.
He would also be the fifth five-star commitment of the class along with Houston (Texas) North Shore cornerback Devin Sanchez (6-2, 170), Birmingham (Ala.) Parker cornerback Na’eem Offord (6-1, 185), Bellefontaine, Ohio, quarterback Tavien St. Clair (6-4, 225) and McKinney, Texas) linebacker Riley Pettijohn (6-2, 215).
