After just one season with Ohio State, sophomore guard Gabe Cupps is planning to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.
Cupps came to Columbus after spending two seasons with Indiana. In 33 games with the Buckeyes, Cupps played in just over 12 minutes per game and scored 1.7 points, while adding 1.1 assists and 1.1 rebounds.
He was added over the offseason as a depth piece to come in behind Bruce Thornton and John Mobley Jr., but he wasn’t able to provide the depth that head coach Jake Diebler likely hoped he would get out of the former Ohio Mr. Basketball.
Cupps originally joined the Hoosiers in the 2023 recruiting class as the No. 94 overall player in the class and the 16-ranked point guard. He contributed some as a true freshman, playing over 20 minutes per game and scoring 2.6 points per contest with a 36.4 field-goal percentage, but an injury kept him out for the most of his next season with Indiana.
With Thornton gone and no replacement in the 2026 recruiting class, the Buckeyes were already almost certainly going to go into the transfer portal for a point guard, but now the need is even more apparent, with the depth at the guard spot leaving through the portal.
Wherever Cupps ends up, he will have two years of eligibility remaining. He joins Devin Royal and Colin White as the only three Buckeyes so far who intend to enter the portal when it opens on April 7.
