Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Georgia In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

Ohio State is alive and well in the 2025 NCAA women’s soccer tournament.

The Buckeyes defeated the No. 8 seeded Georgia Bulldogs 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday in Athens.

Ohio State junior forward Amanda Schlueter gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the game after stealing an off-target pass and nailing a shot past Georgia goalie Hannah Folliard.

After 60 scoreless minutes, the Buckeyes struck again 15 minutes into the second half. Ohio State freshman midfielder Riley Lijewski scored a header off a pass and a cross in from junior defender Ava Bramblett and freshman defender Micayla Decker to extend the Buckeyes lead to two, an advantage they would hold onto for the remainder of the contest to claim a 2-0 victory.

Despite Georgia outshooting Ohio State 15-9, the Buckeyes managed to tally five shots on goal compared to the Bulldogs three.

Both Ohio State senior goalkeeper Molly Pritchard and Folliard saved three shots, though the Bulldogs’ freshman keeper gave up two goals.

Ohio State will now travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on No. 1 seed Notre Dame Thursday in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Scoring Explosion Fuels No. 3 Women’s Ice Hockey To Sweep Over Minnesota State

No. 3 Ohio State (11-1, 9-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) was dominant in its series against Minnesota State (6-7-1, 2-7-1 WCHA) Friday and Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink, using a combined 12 goals over the two-game series to sweep the Mavericks.

After a 1-1 opening period, the Buckeyes reeled off four unanswered goals across the first two frames to beat Minnesota State 5-2 on Friday.

Ohio State senior defender Emma Peschel kicked off the scoring just 13 seconds into the game off assists from senior defender Sara Swiderski and junior forward Jocelyn Amos. Swiderski led the Buckeyes with three assists, while Amos added two.

Minnesota State junior forward Ava Guillemette equalized five minutes later, although that would be the extent of the Mavericks’ success.

Ohio State scored four straight goals over the first two periods including the first by senior forward Sloane Matthews, then back-to-back goals by freshman forward Hilda Svensson and the dagger by freshman forward Sanni Vanhanen to put the Buckeyes up 5-1. Though Minnesota State junior forward Kamryn Van Batavia scored on a power play with five minutes remaining, it was too late, as Ohio State skated to a 5-2 victory.

Buckeyes freshman goaltender Taylor Kressin saved 19 shots, with a 90.5 save percentage in the win.

It was a similar script Saturday. After Ohio State and Minnesota State played to a 1-1 tie in the first period, the Buckeyes responded with four straight goals to take control on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Mavericks.

Following goals by Ohio State junior forward Joy Dunne and Minnesota State freshman forward Makayla Moran, the Buckeyes erupted for four unanswered tallies to seize a commanding 5-1 lead they never relinquished.

Minnesota Staten would rally with two scores in the first two minutes of the third period by Van Batavia and junior defender Lauren Zawoysk to make it 5-3, however, Ohio State added two late goals to secure a 7-3 victory.

Ohio State had seven different goalscorers in the contest including Dunne, Swiderski, Peschel, Amos, freshman forward Maxine Cimoroni, junior forward Jordan Baxter and Matthews.

The Buckeyes will hit the road for a marquee matchup against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (10-4-0, 6-4-0 WCHA) 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.

Women’s Volleyball Falls In Back-To-Back Away Games

Following its first two wins in conference play, Ohio State fell in back-to-back games in a week for the seventh time this season.

In its first of two games over the weekend, Ohio State was swept (17-25, 23-25, 18-25)

by rival Michigan (19-8, 9-7 Big Ten) Friday night at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor.

Ohio State once again struggled to be efficient offensively, hitting on just 10.2 percent of its attacks compared to Michigan’s rate of 33.7.

Not a single Buckeye managed to eclipse double-digit kills as sophomore outside hitter Reese Wuebker led the way with nine.

In its second match, Ohio State dropped a five-set battle (22-25, 25-15, 31-29, 14-25, 12-15) to No. 24 Penn State (15-11, 9-7 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon in State College.

After splitting the first two sets with the Nittany Lions, the Buckeyes rallied for a marathon 31-29 win in the third set but were unable to overcome a late Penn State run in the final frame.

Ohio State junior outside hitter Hannah Jones led the effort with 23 kills and 10 digs, while junior setter Mia Tuman recorded 47 assists and moved into 10th place on Ohio State’s all-time assists list with 2,785.

Ohio State (5-19, 2-14 Big Ten) returns to Columbus for matchups against Northwestern (15-13, 5-11 Big Ten) Friday at 6 p.m. and Michigan State (18-8, 8-8 Big Ten) Sunday at noon.
