
Women’s Soccer Defeats Baylor 2-1 In Double Overtime In Second Round If NCAA Tournament
Ohio State notched their third-straight NCAA tournament upset, surviving a 2-1 double-overtime thriller over Baylor in South Bend, Ind. Sunday.
After neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, Ohio State junior forward Amanda Schlueter netted a goal in the 64th minute before Baylor graduate forward Kai Hayes answered five minutes later to deadlock the game at 1. Schlueter’s goal moved the junior to 13th on Ohio State’s career goals list and tied for seventh in career points with 76.
Though a scoreless end to the second half and no overtime goals set the stage for sophomore defender Anika Poremba’s game-winner in double overtime. Poremba found space on the left side of the box and netted a pass from Schlueter with a left-footed shot to send Ohio State to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2010.
Ohio State dominated offensively, outshooting Baylor 34-11 and earning a season-high 15 corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Molly Pritchard recorded four saves, bringing her career total to 298.
The Buckeyes previously defeated No. 8 seed Georgia in the first round of the tournament and No. 1 seed Notre Dame in the Round of 32.
Ohio State is now set up for an Elite Eight matchup with No. 3 seed Florida State Friday at 5 p.m. at Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
No. 2 Women’s Hockey Dominates No. 6 Minnesota Duluth In Sweep
Ohio State (13-1-0, 11-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earned its fourth straight conference sweep, defeating No. 6 Minnesota Duluth (10-5-0, 6-5-0 WCHA) in a two-game series at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn., with a 3-1 win Friday and a 4-1 victory Saturday.
Friday night, it took just one Buckeyes goal in each period to oust the Bulldogs. Freshman forward Maxine Cimoroni opened the scoring just under 10 minutes in the first period off a rebound from freshman forward Kassidy Carmichael, before junior forward Joy Dunne added a goal in the second period.
Minnesota Duluth answered with a goal just three minutes into the third period as Bulldogs freshman forward Rae Mayer cut Ohio State’s lead to one. However, Dunne scored her second goal of the game on an empty net to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 victory in game one.
Senior goaltender Hailey MacLeod made 24 saves against Minnesota Duluth, while Dunne and freshman forward Hilda Svensson led Ohio State with two points each.
On Saturday, the Buckeyes struck early with goals from senior forward Brooke Disher and freshman forward Sanni Vanhanen in the first period and never relinquished their lead.
Dunne and sophomore forward Jordyn Petrie scored in quick succession in the second frame, with Minnesota Duluth adding a single goal before the period ended to finalize the score at 4-1.
Sophomore goaltender Genny Klein made a career-high 31 saves in her first-ever collegiate start.
The Buckeyes will set their sights on the 2025 D1 in DC Tournament at Medstar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., taking on Clarkson Friday at 4 p.m. and Colgate Saturday at 5 p.m.
Women’s Volleyball Splits its Weekend Against Northwestern and Iowa
Ohio State split its final weekend at home, falling 3-1 at Northwestern on Friday before responding with a four set win over Michigan State on Sunday at the Covelli Center.
The Buckeyes dropped Friday’s match against Northwestern (16-14, 6-12 Big Ten) in four sets (15-25, 27-25, 23-25, 22-25) despite a balanced offensive attack.
Ohio State was unable to overcome multiple Wildcats late-set runs despite 15 kills from junior outside hitter Hannah Jones and double-figure efforts from freshman opposite hitter Na’Vea Gauthier (12), redshirt senior middle blocker Ashley Carr (11) and redshirt freshman middle blocker Kaia Castle (10).
Junior setter Mia Tuman posted a double-double with 45 assists and a season-high 19 digs in the loss.
Ohio State responded Sunday against Michigan State (18-10, 8-10 Big Ten) by defeating the Spartans 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 28-26, 25-18) behind Jones’ career-high 12-dig and 22-kill performance.
Gauthier matched a career-high with 15 kills and Castle added 10 in the victory. Tuman led the Buckeyes with 50 assists and chipped in 11 digs, while Carr recorded a team-high seven blocks to help the Buckeyes close out the Spartans.
Ohio State (6-20, 3-15 Big Ten) closes out its regular season on the road, traveling to Iowa (14-6, 5-13 Big Ten) at 7 p.m. on Friday before taking on No. 1 Nebraska (28-0, 13-0 Big Ten) in Lincoln at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
