
No. 2 Women’s Hockey Claims Season Sweep Over St. Thomas
No. 2 Ohio State (23-3-0, 17-3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) preserved its January win streak with a 2-1 overtime victory over St. Thomas (10-16-0, 5-15-0 WCHA) Friday and a 5-0 thrashing of the Tommies Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus.
St. Thomas opened the scoring Friday just over 11 minutes into the second period when freshman forward Whitney Horton found the back of the net off assists from junior defender Jenessa Gazdik and sophomore defender Cailin Mumm.
The Buckeyes answered in the third period when junior forward Jocelyn Amos got Ohio State on the board with 12 minutes remaining, burying a rebound off a shot from freshman forward Hilda Svensson past St. Thomas goaltender Julia Minotti. Junior forward Joy Dunne also earned an assist on the shot.
Ohio State wasted little time in overtime, sealing the win just 38 seconds in. Dunne found Amos in front of the Tommies’ net and Amos skated around Minotti before tucking home the wide-open goal on the first possession of the extra period.
The Buckeyes were far more decisive Saturday, as scores from five different players and a three-goal second period powered Ohio State to a 5-0 win over St. Thomas.
Ohio State sophomore forward Jordyn Petrie helped the Buckeyes get on the board first with an unassisted goal just 1:51 into the first period.
In the second period, Amos added an insurance goal just over five minutes into the period, before Dunne added a power-play goal just over five minutes later.
Freshman forward Maxine Cimoroni then netted the Buckeyes’ third goal of the frame, with just over two minutes remaining in the period, before Ohio State senior forward Sloane Matthews secured the Buckeyes final goal of the match off assists from Cimoroni and senior defender Brooke Disher 15:42 into the third period.
Cimoroni and Matthews led Ohio State with two points apiece Saturday.
Ohio State will continue its home stand against Minnesota Duluth (13-10-3, 9-8-3 WCHA) on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
No. 19 Ohio State Women’s Gymnastics Edges Illinois In Big Ten Conference Dual Meet
No. 19 Ohio State (2-1, 2-0 Big Ten) secured a narrow 196.000-195.800 win over Illinois (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten) in its first Big Ten dual meet on Saturday at the Covelli Center.
The Buckeyes claimed event titles on uneven bars (49.025) and floor (49.350) while tying the Illini on beam (49.100), marking season-best combined scores on bars and beam.
Sophomore Cameron Smith and freshman Jaylyn Pomager tied for first on vault, with Pomager setting a career high (9.825). Senior Tory Vetter earned season highs on bars, beam, and the all-around (39.350).
Freshman Baylie Belman and sophomore JJ Coleman each scored 9.900 to share Ohio State’s floor title. Coleman has hit 9.900 in every meet this season, while Belman notched the score in her collegiate debut on Saturday.
Ohio State will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on Nebraska in a dual meet at 4 p.m on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
No. 12 Ohio State Women’s Tennis Sweeps Iowa In Season Opener
No. 12 Ohio State (1-0) opened its season with a 4-0 victory over Iowa (3-2) Monday in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
The Buckeyes got off to a hot start in the dual as freshman Hephzibah Oluwadare and junior Teah Chavez claimed a 6-3 win on doubles court one before the pairing of sophomore Nao Nishino and junior Audrey Spencer earned a 6-4 win on doubles court three to claim the doubles point.
In singles, Spencer dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Iowa senior Nikita Vishwase on court five to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead.
Nishino followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Hawkeyes’ sophomore Emma Tothová on court three.
Ohio State freshman Flora Johnson secured the match in her collegiate dual debut with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over sophomore Sally Xu, closing out the final three games after a 3-3 tie in the second set to give the Buckeyes a 4-0 win.
With the victory over the Hawkeyes, Ohio State clinched a bid in the ITA Indoor National Team Championships, which will be held Feb. 6-9 in Evanston and Champaign, Ill.
Next up, Ohio State will remain home to host No. 14 Virginia (5-1) at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
