Olympic Sports Recap: Webster Sets Field Hockey Scoring Record, Men’s Soccer Sweeps Week, Women’s Soccer Extends Win-Streak, Women’s Volleyball Swept in Opening Weekend

No. 13 Field Hockey Undefeated, Webster Sets Record

The Buckeyes field hockey squad opened the season in dominant — and in record-breaking fashion.

Led by graduate forward Makenna Webster, who had a career-high four goals, Ohio State opened its season with a 7-0 shutout of Ball State (1-1) on Friday at Buckeye Varsity Field. Sophomore back Philippa Schipper was Ohio State’s top distributor tallying a career-high two assists on the day, both leading to Webster goals.

The Buckeyes outshot the Cardinals 31-5, as Ohio State held Ball State to just one shot on goal, while notching 25 of its own.

Webster continued her early-season dominance Sunday, breaking her career-high set just days earlier by netting a program-record six goals in the Buckeyes’ 9-3 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes. Webster’s 10-goal, one-assist performance over the weekend earned her Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The Buckeyes took 29 total shots (20 on goal) pummeling Kent State goalkeeper Allison Wood who saved 10 shots. However, just four shots on target from the Golden Flashes wasn’t enough to keep Kent State in the game.

Ohio State (2-0) is set to take on Virginia (1-0) Friday at 4 p.m. and Syracuse (2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Buckeye Varsity Field.

Men’s Soccer Bounces Back, Wins Two Straight

Ohio State, who opened the season ranked No. 3 but fell in its season opener to Virginia Tech, bounced back by capturing the 2025 Wolstein Classic.

The Buckeyes opened their week with a 1-0 victory over Oakland (0-2-1) Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Old Dominion transfer forward Will Arnesen netted the games lone goal in the 55th minute.

Senior Max Trejo, now in his third season as the starting goalkeeper, recorded two saves and posted his 13th career shutout.

Ohio State’s strong play continued in the Wolstein Classic championship, as the Buckeyes defeated Temple (0-3-1) 2-1 Sunday. Sophomore defender Nick McHenry gave Ohio State an early spark, scoring in the 11th minute off a corner from senior midfielder Marko Borkovic.

Borkovic extended the Buckeyes’ advantage in the 80th minute on an assist from sophomore midfielder Nick Skubis. That cushion proved decisive, as a late goal in the 88th minute from Owls senior defender Paolo Kampula would have leveled the match.

Next up, Ohio State (2-1-0) will take on No. 11 Akron (3-0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Women’s Soccer Dominates Princeton and Ashland

The Buckeyes have increased their win-streak three after back-to-back three goal victories.

Ohio State began its week Thursday night with a 4-1 thrashing of Princeton (0-2-2) Thursday at Sherrerd Field.

Although Tigers sophomore forward Alexandra Barry recorded the lone goal of the first half, the Buckeyes held steady. Junior forward Amanda Schlueter sparked the rally in the 55th minute with a penalty kick goal, and Ohio State went on to score four times in just 7:49 — the quickest four-goal stretch in program history.

In the Buckeyes’ second game of the week, Ohio State dominated Ashland 3-0 Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The contest counted as an exhibition for the Eagles, while it was a regular season game for the Buckeyes.

Schlueter, along with defenders junior Ava Bramblett and sophomore Anika Poremba each recorded a goal for Ohio State.

Ohio State will take on Kentucky (5-1) in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball Struggles In Opening Weekend

Ohio State’s start to the 2025 season was all but ideal.

In the opening weekend, the Buckeyes were swept by both VCU and Miami (Fla.) on Friday and Saturday at the Canes Classic in Coral Gables, Fla.

VCU (1-1) defeated Ohio State 26-24, 25-20, 25-17 on the heels of 12 kills apiece from outside hitter Lara Del Core and opposite Julia Rienks. Freshman outside hitter Mina Gunes had a team-high 10 kills for the Buckeyes.

Sophomore setter Mia Tuman had a game-high 25 assists, while sophomore Olivia Hasbrook led Ohio State with eight digs.

It only got worse for the Buckeyes in the second game of the tournament as Miami (1-1) dominated Ohio State 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.

Memphis transfer and junior outside hitter Hannah Jones paced Ohio State with eight kills, but her effort wasn’t enough to slow down a potent Hurricanes offense, spearheaded by senior outside hitter Flormarie Heredia Colon’s 17 kills.

On Wednesday, Ohio State (0-2) heads to Oxford, Ohio, to face the unbeaten Miami RedHawks (3-0) at 6:30 p.m. in Millett Hall.
