According to multiple reports, the Ohio State men’s basketball team will host Ohio University on Oct. 15 this preseason, a scrimmage that will be open to the public.
Going up against a MAC team that has been competitive for years will be a good early test for the Buckeyes and will give the returners, freshmen and transfers a chance to jell in a game-like setting before the regular season begins.
It will be the first time that Bobcats coach Jeff Boals will return to Ohio State as a coach after serving as an assistant under Thad Matta from 2009-16. Boals has been at the helm at OU since 2019 and has managed a 114-76 record during his time in Athens. Last season was his worst in his six seasons, finishing with a 16-16 record (10-8 MAC, fourth place conference finish).
Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler and the Buckeyes will be able to get a sense of whether the core of Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. will be able to continue last season’s production while getting more help from transfers Cristoph Tilly, Brandon Noel and Gabe Cupps.
