Ohio State Ranked No. 1 In First College Football Playoff Rankings Of The Season

After its 38-14 win over Penn State in Week 10, Ohio State is No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season

The Buckeyes have been ranked at the top of the AP poll since its Week 1 win over Texas, and now are getting the same recognition from the CFP committee.

Following Ohio State in the rankings was No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 Alabama, which are the other three teams that would get a bye in the first round if the season ended right now.

Rounding out the rest of the top 12 were No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 BYU, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 9 Oregon, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 11 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma.

However, since one spot is guaranteed to the five highest-ranked conference champions, meaning in this version of the rankings, Memphis — which is not in the top 25 currently — would get into the tournament ahead of Oklahoma. Texas would also be out of the bracket, with No. 14 Virginia making it into the tournament ahead of the Longhorns as the top ACC team.

Other Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 are No. XX, No. 19 USC, No. 20 Iowa and No. 21 Michigan.

Head coach Ryan Day was asked about the rankings coming out at his Tuesday press conference, but he said that he hopes his players aren’t paying attention to them.

“I hope nobody pays attention to it because it doesn’t matter,” Day said. “It’s good for the fans and I think it’s great for college football to be talking about it, but nothing matters if we don’t continue to win.”

There are still five more weeks of football, including conference championship week, before the CFP rankings are finalized.
