The NCAA has officially decided on the dates of the new single transfer portal window that will take effect after this season.
The portal will be open from Jan. 2-16, officially approved by the Division I Administrative Committee. It has also changed the window for player’s whose head coach has left from a 30-day window to just a 15-day window. The 15-day window will now open after a new coach is hired rather than right after a coach is fired.
The NCAA Football Oversight Committee recommended a portal window from Jan. 2-11, but that was extended after hearing feedback from student-athletes.
With the new window, teams in the College Football Playoff will still be at a disadvantage with the CFP going through mid January. The national championship will take place on Jan. 19 this season, three days after the portal closes.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea at all,” Day said when asked about the Jan. 2-11 window proposal. “In the conversations that we had with the Big Ten coaches, I think the majority of them agree. I just don’t quite understand how teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they’re still getting ready to play for games. It doesn’t make any sense to me.
Players who are participating in the CFP during the open transfer window will receive an extra five-day window after their season officially ends to decide whether they want to transfer.
