Michigan To Appeal NCAA’s Punishment for Sign Stealing Violations

Hours after the NCAA officially announced its decision regarding a punishment for Michigan’s sign stealing scandal, the program has responded.

Michigan will appeal the NCAA’s penalties handed down for the program’s 11 total rule violations.

Michigan issued a statement addressing the NCAA’s imposed sanctions.

“We appreciate the work of the Committee on Infractions. But, respectfully, in a number of instances the decision makes fundamental errors in interpreting NCAA bylaws; and it includes a number of conclusions that are directly contrary to the evidence — or lack of evidence — in the record,” it read. “We will appeal this decision to ensure a fair result, and we will consider all other options.”

The NCAA handed Michigan a slew of punishments including show-causes varying in length for Jim Harbaugh, Connor Stalions, Sherrone Moore and Denard Robinson, an additional game suspension for Moore and over $25 million in estimated financial losses.

The ruling also placed Michigan on a four-year probation with a 14-week prohibition on recruiting communications during that period, and stated the university will see a 25 percent reduction in football official visits during the 2025-26 season.

Moore issued a statement in response to the NCAA’s ruling.

“I am glad that this part of the process has been completed,” Moore said. “I greatly respect the rules governing collegiate athletics and it is my intent to have our program comply with those rules at all times. I will continue to focus my attention on our team and the upcoming 2025 season.”
