Former Ohio State Tight End Jelani Thurman Transfers To North Carolina, Defensive Lineman Maxwell Roy To UCLA

The transfer portal carousel continues for Ohio State, as two more Buckeyes have committed to new schools.

Former Ohio State tight end Jelani Thurman has committed to North Carolina, according to BuckNuts, while defensive lineman Maxwell Roy has pledged to UCLA, per CBS Sports.

Over three seasons at Ohio State, the 6-6, 250-pound Thurman appeared in 33 games with one start in the 2023 Cotton Bowl, totaling 13 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, including seven receptions for 84 yards and a score in 2025.

A product of Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, Ga., Thurman was the No. 111 overall recruit, No. 4 tight end, and No. 6 player in Georgia in the class of 2023. Thurman enters the portal ranked as the No. 149 overall transfer and the No. 10 tight end transfer. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Tar Heels.

Roy, a former four-star recruit from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, stands at 6-3, 301 pounds and was ranked No. 357 nationally, No. 36 among defensive linemen, and No. 10 in the state of Pennsylvania.

Roy, who spent most of his lone season with the Buckeyes injured, will have four seasons of eligibility remaining at UCLA.
