Former Ohio State Running Back Matt Snell Dies At Age 84

Former Ohio State running back and New York Jets running back Matt Snell died at the age of 84 on March 10.

According to his son, Beau Snell, Matt Snell died of natural causes at an assisted-living facility on Long Island.

Snell played three seasons at Ohio State from 1961-63 and was named the Buckeyes’ team MVP and a team captain in 1963. That season, he led the team with 491 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

He was then drafted by the New York Jets with the No. 4 overall pick in the 1964 AFL draft. He spent nine seasons with New York from 1964-72 and ranks fourth on the Jets’ all-time rushing list with 4,285 yards.

The North Hempstead, New York, native is best remembered for rushing 121 yards and scoring the New York Jets’ only touchdown in their 16-7 upset of the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

Snell is survived by his wife Sharon, son Beau and daughter Jada. His great-nephew, Benny Snell Jr., was a former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
