Former Ohio State forward Sean Stewart is staying in the Big Ten.
He told On3’s Joe Tipton on Wednesday that he is committing to Oregon, putting him on his third notable Power Four program in three seasons.
Stewart joins Dana Altman’s Ducks’ program after a disappointing sophomore season with Ohio State in which the former five-star All-American and Duke transfer started each of the 30 games he appeared in but averaged just 5.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in those contests while shooting 54.2 percent from the field (71 of 131) and 50.0 percent from the free-throw line (27 of 54). He also led the team in fouls with 103 — 17 more than the next closest Buckeye — and fouled out a team-leading seven times.
Stewart — who did indicate he was happy with his role at Ohio State after the season-ending loss to Iowa in the Big Ten tournament but changed his mind late and entered the transfer portal just hours before the window closed on April 25 — will now have to take on his old team next season in Eugene, Ore., where the Buckeyes will travel to for the first time in program history.
Oregon went 25-10 and 12-8 in its first year in the Big Ten last season, earning a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament before falling to former Pac-12 foe and No. 4 seed Arizona in the second round.
Stewart is the last of the five former Buckeyes who have found new homes after entering the transfer portal this offseason. Stewart’s fellow former McDonald’s All-American five-star Aaron Bradshaw committed to Memphis on April 16, while Meechie Johnson Jr. transferred back to South Carolina on April 1, Evan Mahaffey pledged to Akron on March 28 and Austin Parks signed with Toledo on April 16.
