Former Ohio State center Nick Mangold died at age 41 due to complications from kidney disease, the New York Jets announced on Sunday.
Mangold had recently posted a message on Twitter to “my NY Jets and Ohio State Buckeye communities” looking for a match to donate a kidney.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” his tweet read. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
Mangold started at center for the Buckeyes for three seasons and was part of the 2002 national championship team. He was a first-team All-American in 2005 before being drafted by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft.
He played 11 seasons with the Jets and was a seven-time Pro Bowler and selected as first-team All-Pro twice and second-team once. He retired following the 2016 season.
“Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership,” said Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson in a statement released by the team. “For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike. His contributions on the field were extraordinary — but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”
