First-Year Buckeyes John Walker, Mason Williams Shed Black Stripes

First-year Buckeyes John Walker and Mason Williams are the latest Buckeyes to become “official” members of the team.

Each player had their black stripe removed during practice on Wednesday. Williams, a rising senior tight end, spent the first three years of his collegiate career at Ohio University and transferred to Ohio State during the winter.

Williams is expected to be one of a few tight ends who could earn playing time this year. Williams had 26 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns as a Bobcat last year. He and other tight ends Hunter Welcing and Nate Roberts were praised by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day during a press conference on Monday.

“Bringing in Mason Williams and Hunter at tight end with Nate, they’re not perfect at all, but they’re grinding at it, and they’re working at it,” Day said. “And I think those guys at tight end have shown up, especially in the pass game, just seeing them make a lot more plays maybe, than we’ve seen in the past. That has been a bright spot.”

Like Williams, Walker should also crack Ohio State’s rotation. The rising junior started in all 12 games last year for UCF. Walker had 40 total tackles, including three for loss last year.
