Recruiting Outlook: Northwestern OC Chip Kelly Visits OSU QB Commit Brady Edmunds, Buckeyes Offer More Prospects

Chip Kelly Visits Brady Edmunds
While the Buckeyes continue to keep their eye out for a second quarterback to add to the 2027 class, four-star Brady Edmunds, who pledged to the Buckeyes back in December 2024, seems to be keeping his eye out as well.
Recently, he was visited at his school by UCLA, and now Northwestern is checking in on him as well. Chip Kelly, now the offensive coordinator at Northwestern, was at Edmunds’ school to visit the four-star on Thursday.
Kelly was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State when Edmunds committed to the Buckeyes, but left to coach in the NFL again for the Las Vegas Raiders, a position he was fired from midway through the season.
It’s not entirely clear whether Edmunds’ interest in remaining committed to Ohio State is waning at this point, but he seems to be keeping his options open.
Edmunds has been falling in the 247Sports composite rankings since he pledged to Ohio State. When he committed, he was rated as a five-star player and was the No. 10 player in the country and the No. 2-ranked quarterback. A year and a half later, he is the No. 225 overall player in the country and the No. 18 quarterback.
Northwestern recently landed a commitment from three-star quarterback RJ Day, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day’s son, but it seems that Kelly wouldn’t mind adding another QB to the class.
Ohio State Offers Two 2027 Prospects
The Buckeyes are still making scholarship offers to 2027 prospects, with three-star tight end Brady Johnson and four-star wide receiver Cade Cooper being the latest to be offered by Ohio State.
Johnson is committed to Northwestern and has been since Feb. 4. He is ranked the No. 1,257 prospect in the country and the No. 64 tight end.
The Buckeyes don’t yet have a tight end prospect committed in the 2027 class, but have been in on four-star Brock Williams — who is set to commit on Friday, choosing between Ohio State, Georgia and Texas — three-star Sean Currie and four-star Mason Oglesby, among others.
In the 2026 recruiting class, tight ends coach Keenan Bailey added just one player at the position, with Nick Lautar flipping from Louisville to Ohio State late in the year. However, Bailey has done very well in the transfer portal and has shown that he will use transfers to fill his group.
Cooper is ranked as the No. 297 prospect in the country and the No. 37 wide receiver, adn while he is currently uncommitted, he holds 25 Division I offers and already has three official visits scheduled.
He will be going to Ole Miss the weekend of May 29, Georgia Tech on June 5 and Notre Dame on June 24. The Buckeyes have just one wide receiver committed in the 2027 class to this point, but it is a strong one, with five-star Jamier Brown committing before Edmunds did in 2024 and recently announcing that he had shut his recruitment down.
Peter Bourque Commits To Virginia Tech
On May 14, four-star quarterback and former Michigan commit, Peter Bourque, committed to Virginia Tech, giving former Penn State coach James Franklin another win on the recruiting trail.
Ohio State quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler visited Bourque after spring practices, one of many different 2027 QB prospects that the Buckeyes have checked in on recently, but they weren’t a major factor in his recruitment.
Bourque ultimately chose the Hokies over Georgia and Penn State.
