Men’s Soccer Shutout by Rutgers 2-0

In Ohio State’s lone game of the week, the Buckeyes fell to Rutgers (6-2-1, 2-1-0) Friday at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Despite the Buckeyes outshooting the Scarlet Knights 9-2 in the first half, the match remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

However, just four minutes into the second half, Rutgers freshman defender Jack Andrus sent the ball upfield to sophomore forward Matty Lynch who layed a volley behind to freshman midfielder Joshua Jerome who curled in the ball to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Then, in the 72nd minute Rutgers junior midfielder Joschi Schelb received a pass from senior midfielder Timo Jansen in opposing territory and carried it to Ohio State’s 18-yard box, where he fired a shot from outside the box to extend the Scarlet Knights lead to two. Schelb’s goal ultimately sealed the match for Rutgers, as Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton saved eight shots to fuel the shutout.

Next up, Ohio State (4-4, 1-1 Big Ten) will head back to Columbus to face UCLA (2-4-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) at 6 p.m. Monday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Field Hockey Loses Heartbreaker To Rutgers, Dominates Delaware

In Ohio State’s road trip to the East Coast, the Buckeyes had two polar opposite outcomes.

Ohio State opened its weekend with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 19 Rutgers (5-4, 1-0 Big Ten) Friday at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.

It took little time for the Scarlet Knights to get on the board with a goal from sophomore forward Sophie Kuiper just 47 seconds into the match. Ohio State responded just five minutes later as graduate forward Makenna Webster sent a pass over to senior forward Lindsey Roberts who netted a shot to even the match at one apiece.

After a stalemate through the final three and a half quarters, the game was sent into overtime. Seven minutes into the extra period, Rutgers freshman back Martha Goodridge sealed the Scarlet Knights 2-1 overtime victory on an assist from fellow freshman back Samantha Arnold.

Despite the defeat, the Buckeyes outshot the Scarlet Knights, 23-12, while Ohio State also led Rutgers 14-9 in shots on target.

Ohio State bounced back in its second contest of the weekend with a 4-0 thrashing over Delaware (4-6) Sunday at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

Webster led the way for the Buckeyes with two goals and an assist, while freshman forward Raleigh Kerst and senior forward Loryn Jordon each added a goal for Ohio State. The Buckeyes held a commanding 14-3 edge in shots on goal over the Blue Hens.

Ohio State (4-5, 0-1 Big Ten) returns home from its five game road trip to Columbus to face off against Maryland 3 p.m. Friday at Buckeye Varsity Field.

No. 23 Women’s Soccer Ends Streak of Scoreless Ties, Dominates Illinois

Following a four game streak where Ohio State finished in a scoreless tie, the Buckeyes finally got on the board with a shutout win over Illinois.

No. 23 Ohio State finished four straight games 0-0: Sept. 12 versus Michigan, Sept. 18 against Wisconsin, Sept. 21 versus Nebraska and last Thursday at Northwestern.

After a scoreless first half, it looked as if Ohio State was on its way to its fifth straight scoreless tie, however, the Buckeyes finally broke through.

Junior midfielder Ava Bramblett netted a goal in the 56th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Berkley Mape, ending Ohio State’s absurd streak of over 425 minutes without a goal scored or allowed.

The Buckeyes rank fourth nationally in goals allowed, giving up an average of only 0.273 per game. Ohio State hasn’t allowed a goal in its last seven games.

Bramblett added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute before junior midfielder Elle Britt sealed Ohio State’s 3-0 victory over Illinois (9-2-1, 2-2-1 Big Ten) with a score in the 76th minute.

Ohio State (5-1-5, 1-0-4 Big Ten) hits the road to take on Michigan State (6-2-4, 3-0-2 Big Ten) in East Lansing 2 p.m. Sunday.

Women’s Volleyball Falters in Road Trip to Los Angeles

The Buckeyes’ trip to California didn’t unfold the way Ohio State had hoped.

Ohio State fell to UCLA (8-4, 2-0 Big Ten) in a tight five set battle (25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 25-22, 11-15) at the Covelli Center Friday.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Jones paced the Buckeyes offensively with 23 kills and three aces, but it wasn’t enough to slow down a Bruins offense that had five players rack up eight or more kills.

In the Buckeyes second match of the weekend, Ohio State was swept (23-25, 22-25, 15-25) by No. 17 USC (10-2, 1-1 Big Ten) Saturday at the Covelli Center.

The Trojans overpowered the Buckeyes offensively, racking up 46 kills compared to Ohio State’s 34. USC converted 26 percent of their attacks versus Ohio State’s 16.2 percent clip.

The Buckeyes (3-7, 0-2 Big Ten) will continue their road trip when they travel to Seattle to take on Washington (5-7, 0-2 Big Ten) Friday at 10 p.m.
