No. 15 Field Hockey defeats No. 11 Michigan 1-0

In a battle between rivals and two of the top five teams in the Big Ten, Ohio State reigned supreme.

No. 15 Ohio State (7-5, 3-1 Big Ten) defeated No. 11 Michigan (8-4, 3-2 Big Ten) 1-0 Sunday at Buckeye Varsity Field on the heels of sophomore forward Sienna Golden’s second goal of the season.

The lone goal of the match came with five minutes remaining in the second quarter as graduate forward Makenna Webster dished a pass to Golden, who hit the ball in the air to give Ohio State what was ultimately the game-sealing goal.

Webster now leads the Buckeyes by a whopping 30 points, totaling 37 and leading Ohio State in both goals (16) and assists (5). She ranks 2nd nationally to Iowa’s Dionne van Aalsum (3.64) with an average of 3.08 points per game, and ranks as the 3rd leading goalscorer at 1.33 goals per game.

Ohio State has now won its last four matches defeating Delaware 4-0 Sept. 28, No. 12 Maryland 2-1 (2OT) Oct. 3, and Penn State 2-0 Oct. 5.

The Buckeyes will look to continue their winning streak when they take on Michigan State (3-9, 0-4 Big Ten) Sunday at 1 p.m. in East Lansing.

No. 22 Women’s Soccer Splits Pair Against the West Coast’s Oregon and Washington

The Buckeyes had an up and down week when it hosted the Ducks and Huskies this week.

No. 22 Ohio State opened the week Thursday with a 1-0 win over Oregon (2-9-1, 0-5-3 Big Ten) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes edged out the Ducks thanks to freshman midfielder Riley Lijewski’s first career goal, which she netted in the 52nd minute off a pass from senior forward Amanda Schlueter. Ohio State would hold on for the final 38 minutes and extra time to seal the one goal victory over the Ducks.

Though Ohio State wouldn’t have the same luck in its second match of the week, falling 1-0 to Washington (9-1-5, 6-0-2 Big Ten) Sunday as Huskies senior midfielder Lucy Newlin netted the game’s only goal on a penalty kick just before halftime. The Huskies held an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal.

Ohio State (6-2-6, 2-1-5 Big Ten) now embarks on the first of a three game road trip to end the season in Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

After another tough week, the Buckeyes have now lost six-straight games.

Ohio State fell to No. 12 Purdue (13-2,4-1 Big Ten) in straight sets (19-25, 16-25, 17-25) Thursday at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes had 13 more hits than the Boilermakers (103-91), however, Purdue connected on 42.9 percent of its attempts compared to Ohio State’s mark of 12.6.

The Buckeyes also had 22 attacking errors, to Purdue’s six, a massive discrepancy that cost Ohio State the first set and potentially the match.

In their second matchup of the week against No. 14 Minnesota (14-3, 4-2 Big Ten), Ohio State was swept by the Golden Gophers, 22-25, 21-25, 14-25, in a match where the Buckeyes struggled to close out sets late. No. 16 Ohio State (2-0) defended its home ice in its season opening series with a sweep (5-3, 3-1) of Northern Michigan (0-4) Friday and Saturday at Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes defeated the Wildcats, 5-2, on Friday on the back of three goals in the first period. Sophomore forward Félix Caron fueled the first period run scoring the final two goals of the frame.

Northern Michigan quickly answered with two goals at 9:12 and 11:23 in the second period, though Ohio State was not phased, as senior forward Davis Burnside extended the Buckeyes lead back to two just four minutes later. Junior forward Riley Thompson sealed Ohio State’s win scoring a goal with just 31 seconds remaining. Junior goalkeeper Kristoffer Eberly kept the Wildcats at bay with 13 saves on the night.

Caron flicked in an empty netter to seal Ohio State’s win with just under a minute to play.

The Buckeyes doubled the Wildcats shots on goal (48-24), while Eberly had 23 saves. Despite the loss, Northern Michigan freshman goalkeeper Oliver Auyeung-Ashton had 45 saves, only allowing two goals.

Men’s Soccer Loses Second-Straight To No. 20 Indiana

The Buckeyes were unable to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Wisconsin Oct. 3, falling to the Hoosiers after holding an early 2-1 lead.

Ohio State (5-6, 2-3 Big Ten) was defeated by No. 20 Indiana (8-3-1, 3-3 Big Ten) 4-2 at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington as the Hoosiers scored three goals in the final 35 minutes to seal the victory.

The Buckeyes headed into halftime even at one with the Hoosiers as a goal by graduate defender Thomas Gilej assisted by senior midfielder Luciano Pechota and freshman forward Nyle Waugh tied the game in the 37th minute. Ohio State then took the lead in the 48th minute as freshman forward Michael Ndiweni scored off a rebounded shot from redshirt-senior defender Nathan Demian.

However, it was all Hoosiers from there. Indiana junior defender Alex Barger scored the equalizer just six minutes later, before senior forward Palmer Ault took the lead 67 minutes in and graduate defender Ben Do added an insurance goal in the waning seconds of the 89th minute.

Ohio State is set to host its archrival Michigan (6-2-3, 2-2-1 Big Ten) Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
