Olympic Recap: Soccer Teams Start Big Ten Tourney, Women’s Hockey Drops First Game, Women’s Volleyball On 10-Game Win Streak

The Big Ten soccer tournament is underway, and both the men’s and women’s teams from Ohio State qualified for the quarterfinals.

OSU’s women’s team lost in the first round of tournament play Sunday, falling at Nebraska by a 4-0 final. The Cornhuskers notched two goals in each half to cruise away from the Buckeyes.

The men, meanwhile, are seeded third in the conference and slated to host sixth-seeded Michigan State Nov. 4. The Buckeyes posted a 9-2-5 record during the regular season which included a 2-1 victory over the Spartans Oct. 25. MSU is 6-8-2 on the year.

Kickoff time is to be determined for the men’s quarterfinal match. Ohio State and Michigan State will play at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Women’s Hockey Drops First Game Of Season

After an 8-0 start to its national title-defending campaign, the No. 1-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team finally dropped a contest, falling to then-No. 2 Minnesota Oct. 28, who has since leapfrogged them in the rankings to take the top spot.

Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the second period off of goals from forward Jenna Buglioni and defenseman Sophie Jaques — her team-leading eighth of the season — but Minnesota erupted with three goals in the third, none of which were answered by the Buckeyes.

OSU did respond with a 4-4 shootout win the following day, which counts as a tie in both teams’ overall record.

It was the Golden Gophers who jumped out to a lead this time, taking a 2-0 advantage within 3:30 of game time. Forwards Abbey Murphy and Josefin Bouveng notched the two scores for Minnesota.

Ten minutes later, Ohio State manufactured a response when forward Makenna Webster slapped home her first goal of the season. Murphy answered with her second goal of the evening for Minnesota, putting them ahead 3-1, but Jaques and forward Jennifer Gardiner exchanged scores to knot the contest up 3-3.

Those were goals two and three of a five-goal third period. Jaques closed the scoring onslaught with 5:34 to play on her second goal of the night — 10th of the season — to force overtime in a 4-4 match.

Neither side sealed victory in overtime, resulting in a tie as the official result of the game, but Ohio State managed a 2-1 victory in the ensuing shootout after an extra round of shots. Buglioni scored the shootout-clinching goal.

Women’s Volleyball Knocks Off Penn State

Make it 10 in-a-row for the Ohio State women’s volleyball team, who is up to No. 6 in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

The Buckeyes won two games in the past week, opening with a sweep of rival Michigan at home before hitting the road for a match with No. 11 Penn State Oct. 29.

That match proved much more contested. The two sides exchanged sets back and forth, PSU opening the match with a 25-19 win before OSU fought back to win the second set 27-25. The Nittany Lions took set three 28-26, the Buckeyes set four 25-14.

It all came down to set five, which Ohio State took 17-15. Outside hitter Gabby Gonzales finished with a game-high 24 kills, outside hitter Adria Powell with a game-high seven blocks.
