Olympic Recap: Eight To Indoor Championships

Ohio State’s track and field teams will send eight athletes to the Indoor National Championships between the men’s and women’s teams.

One relay team will compete for the Buckeyes, with the women’s 4×400 meter qualifying via a time of 3:31.4.

The rest of the Buckeyes scattered amongst the field will be individuals. On Friday junior Marcia Sey competes in the semifinals of the women’s 60 meter hurdles, while the rest of the competitors hit the competition on Saturday. On the women’s side, junior Amaya Ugarte enters as the highest seed of any from OSU’s men’s or women’s team, the sixth seed in high jump.

Graduate Adelaide Aquilla, last year’s NCAA outdoor champion and the women’s collegiate shotput record holder, competes in shotput. Graduate Jaimie Robinson rounds out the women’s field with a spot in the triple jump event.

On the men’s side, junior Hayden Tobias will compete in shotput, while senior Clarence Foote-Talley competes in triple jump and senior Shaun Miller Jr. takes on high jump.

The Indoor Championships start Friday in Albuquerque, New Mexico and continue through Saturday.

Spencer Named Big Ten Gymnast Of The Week

An Ohio State freshman picked up some accolades in men’s gymnastics this past week.

Caden Spencer was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for his performance on the road as Ohio State took down No. 11 Army with a season-best 409.950 team score.

Spencer recorded the single highest score on vault of any Buckeye this season, posting a 14.750 before also winning the parralel bars competition (14.100) and high bar event (13.900). He also posted a personal best and finished second in floor with a 14.250.

“I’m happy to see that my hard work these last several months is playing off,” Spencer said. “I won’t get complacent as I have a lot more to prove and accomplish. This is only the beginning.”

Ohio State hosts No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 4 Penn State in a tri-meet Saturday at 3:30 p.m in the Covelli Center.

Women’s Tennis Opens Big Ten Play With Win

The No. 3 Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Penn State Saturday in a clean sweep, winning 7-0 at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.

OSU won the doubles point 2-0 before taking each of the matches in singles, all of which got the chance to play out without being suspended. No. 33 Irene Cantos Siemers had the most impressive win of the bunch, knocking off No. 42 Sofia Chekhlystova in a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.

The Buckeyes’ other two ranked racket-wielders, No. 22 Sydni Ratliff and No. 105 Shelly Bereznyak each recorded straight-set victories over their opponents.
