Ohio State Four-Star Defensive Back Target Kamar Wilcoxson Commits To Tennessee

Though he planned to take an official visit to Ohio State the weekend of June 12-14, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star cornerback Kamar Wilcoxson announced his commitment to Tennessee on Monday afternoon.

The 6-1, 190-pound Wilcoxson — who is considered the 14th-best safety and No. 266 prospect overall in the class of 2021 — is a two-time former Florida commit who reopened his recruitment in late March and subsequently listed the Buckeyes, Gators and Volunteers among his top eight school in early April.

Ohio State was the perceived leader in Wilcoxson’s recruitment at that time, but a lot has changed in the weeks since.

The Buckeyes — already holding commitments from St. Louis De Smet Jesuit four-star cornerback Jakailin Johnson, Nashville Ensworth four-star cornerback Andre Turrentine and Cincinnati La Salle three-star cornerback Devonta Smith — added Bowling Green (Ky.) South Warren four-star athlete Jantzen Dunn to the fold on April 20.

That left Wilcoxson — a native of Stone Mountain, Ga. — jockeying with Virginia Beach (Va.) Princess Anne five-star cornerback Tony Grimes; Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star cornerback Jaylin Davies; Pasadena (Calif.) John Muir four-star Jamier Johnson; Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway four-star safety Derrick Davis; and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro four-star athlete Denzel Burke for the one remaining defensive back spot left in the class, and allowed the Volunteers to make an unexpected push for his pledge.

It’s worth noting, though, Wilcoxson’s decision will not have any impact on Ohio State’s pursuit of his teammate, four-star offensive tackle J.C. Latham, who is widely expected to end up with the Buckeyes.
