Newest Ohio State Quarterback Among Favorites For Heisman Trophy

Justin Fields has never played a down at Ohio State. He’s never started a collegiate game anywhere, for that matter, and there’s still no guarantee that he’ll be eligible in 2019.

None of that is keeping the online sports betting service Bovada from listing Fields as one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2019, though.

The Kennesaw, Ga., native transferred to Ohio State from Georgia earlier this month and is the odds on favorite to win the starting job, assuming he is granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA for immediate eligibility. On Bovada, he already has 10/1 odds of winning the Heisman, though, putting him in a tie for third-favorite.

Interestingly, Fields sits at 10/1 along with Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, who he backed up last season.

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is listed at the favorite with 2/1 odds while Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa is second at 4/1.

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell is listed at 40/1 odds, although he is expected to transfer out of Columbus after putting his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

Fields signed with the Bulldogs in the class of 2018 as the No. 2 overall player (behind Lawrence) and No. 1 dual-threat quarterback. He completed 27 of 39 passes for 328 yards and four scores in limited action while also rushing 42 times for 266 yards and four more touchdowns.

Martell also shined as a backup last season (to Dwayne Haskins, who was a Heisman finalist for the Buckeyes). Martell was 23 of 28 for 269 yards and a touchdown while rushing 22 times for 128 yards and two scores.
