Former Ohio State Wrestler Kyle Snyder Wins Third Yariguin Grand Prix Title
Former Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder made history one Sunday when he became the first American to win three titles at the Yariguin Grand Prix.
The Yariguin Grand Prix is considered the world’s most challenging international wrestling tournament. Snyder, who is affectionately nicknamed “Captain America,” defeated Shamil Musaev of Russia with an 8-3 decision in the 97kg finals.
In 2017, Snyder became the youngest American to win the Yariguin. He won the tournament for a second time the following year to become the first American man to win two Yariguin titles. After defeating Musaev, Snyder added a third Yariguin gold to his decorated accolades, including Olympic gold and silver medals and three NCAA titles.
Snyder wrestles professionally for Penn State’s Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and was the only American man to win gold at this year’s Yariguin. Two American women— Helen Marulis (57kg) and Patricia Bruntil (65kg) — won gold at the event.
