Former Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly Fired By The Las Vegas Raiders After 11 Games

Following a tumultuous 2-9 start to the season, during which Las Vegas boasted one of the league’s worst offenses, the Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, the team announced Sunday night. Kelly was in his first season with the Raiders after serving last year as the offensive coordinator for Ohio State.
“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” Raiders head coach Pete Carroll said in the press release. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”
After helping Ohio State to a national championship in 2024, Kelly was hired to Carroll’s staff in the 2025 offseason for a reported $6 million per year, making him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL.
Kelly spent just one season with Ohio State, helping lead the Buckeyes’ offensive unit to 14th in the country in scoring offense with 35.7 points per game and 30th in total offense with 429.4 yards per game.
However, Kelly’s return to the NFL didn’t go as planned. Through 11 games, Las Vegas’ offense earned just 268.9 yards per game, the third-worst mark in the league. Despite drafting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty sixth overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, the Raiders have rushed for a mere 79.5 yards per game on the ground, the second-lowest average in the NFL.
Kelly previously led UCLA from 2018–23 and Oregon from 2009–12, with a four-year NFL stint in between as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (2013–15) and San Francisco 49ers (2016). Prior to his time with the Raiders and four head coaching gigs, Kelly spent 10 seasons as an offensive coordinator for New Hampshire (1999-2006) — where he coached Ryan Day — and Oregon (2007-08).
