Coaches Corner: Ryan Day, Greg Schiano Recap No. 4 Ohio State Over Rutgers

Ohio State acting head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano provide their assessments on both sides of the ball after the Buckeyes rolled Saturday at Ohio Stadium in their 52-3 win over Rutgers.

Ryan Day

On sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins…

“Growing every practice, every game. And building as we go. It’s not going to be perfect. We know that. Trying to prepare every week for the game and get everybody off to a good start. But I think his preparation was good this week and he came out and played well.”

On redshirt freshman quarterback Tate Martell…

“I thought you got a chance to see what Tate can do today, which is great. He’s 10 for 10, throwing the ball. And ran for I think 90-something yards. And he can beat you with his feet and beat you with his arm. And that’s what makes him a special player. And we got him in the rhythm early.”

On the offense…

“I think we have a great group of guys here. We have a lot of talent on offense. And I think that combined with the tempo has been great. We did play fast at times today but not as fast as against Oregon State and that was a little bit by design. I thought we got into some good plays based on what they were giving us and we took some shots in the pass game and then hit them.”

Greg Schiano

On sophomore defensive end Chase Young…

“Well, I love the emotion and the fervor that he plays with. We’ve just got to make sure we don’t let it get in the way of us winning. In a tight ball game, it would’ve been a shame to lose Chase. He understands. I think he’s a young guy but he plays with great emotion and he plays — he’s a really good player. He’s really hard to block. So it’s not going to be a big thing, we’ve just got to kind of make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

On junior safety Jordan Fuller…

“Big difference. He’s such a stabilizing force and what Rutgers does offensively with all the shifts and motions, there’s a lot of adjusting to do. I mean, that’s pro football right there — I shouldn’t say that, you’re not allowed unbalanced in pro football, but a lot of shifting and motion is. And our guys did a good job of adjusting.”

On redshirt freshman cornerback Shaun Wade…

“Shaun has just been progressing in practice and as we always talk to our players about, it’s the most competitive environment in college football. Everybody, if you get your opportunities, if you make the most of them, you’re going to get more opportunities. And they’re not unlimited, so you have to take advantage of the ones you get and Shaun has done that.”
