Chasing History: Dobbins, Young, Hill Inch Closer To Ohio State Records

Ohio State players continue to move up the record books following a 52-3 victory against Northwestern. Seven games into the season could be a halfway point for a Buckeyes team likely to play in the Big Ten Championship and a bowl game, so here are where some players stand in terms of making it into the program’s history.

  • Chase Young recorded another sack to bring his total to 9 ½ on the season. He is now five sacks away from passing Vernon Gholston’s program record of 14 sacks that was set in 2007.
  • J.K. Dobbins put up 121 rushing yards, enough to move him past Braxton Miller (3,315 yards) and Beanie Wells (3,382 yards) and into No. 5 all time on Ohio State’s career rushing yard list. With 3,403 career rushing yards, he is 150 yards away from tying Tim Spencer for fourth on the list.
  • Dobbins is also 53 yards away from 1,000 yards on the season. The junior running back would be the first player in program history to run for 1,000 yards in their freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, and only the second Ohio State player (Archie Griffin) to run for 1,000 yards in three separate seasons.
  • K.J. Hill only put up two catches for 19 yards, but that gives Hill 29 catches on the year and 173 for his career, which puts him 18 away from tying David Boston for the most receptions in the team’s history.
  • Hill also extended his streak of games with a reception to 41. He is now seven games away from tying the Ohio State record held by Gary Williams, which can be met in a 14-game season but can be surpassed with a run to the national title game.
  • Ryan Day became only the fourth coach in program history to start his head coaching tenure at Ohio State with a 10-0 record. Only Earle Bruce (11-0), Carroll Widdoes (12-0) and Urban Meyer (24-0) have had longer undefeated starts.
  • Blake Haubeil successfully kicked a 55-yard field goal to end the first half for the Buckeyes, which tied for the second longest kick in program history. Mike Nugent hit two field goals from 55 yards in 2004, and Dan Stultz in 1997 and Gary Cairns in 1996 each hit it from the same distance once. The record is held by Tom Skladany, who hit a kick from 59 yards out in 1975.
