Baseball: Ohio State Falls To Michigan 3-0 As Wolverines End Buckeyes Season

No. 6 seed Ohio State saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to a disappointing close Thursday, as No. 7 seed Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 3-0 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, knocking out its rival and  advancing to the tournament quarterfinals.

Following two scoreless innings, Michigan got on the board first in the top of the third. Wolverines right fielder Dane Morrow and second baseman Colby Turner walked before third baseman Brayden Jefferis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catcher Noah Miller then followed that up with a single up the middle to score Morrow and Turner, giving Michigan a 2-0 lead.

Michigan would hold that two-run advantage until the eighth inning when the Wolverines added an insurance run. Turner reached on an error, and Jefferis walked, putting runners on first and second. Miller then singled through the right side as Turner crossed home plate for the second time of the day, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 advantage.

Despite two more chances to rally, Ohio State accrued just one hit in its final six batters, as Michigan held on to advance to the quarterfinals, while the Buckeyes’ season came to a close in the double-elimination round of the Big Ten tournament.

Ohio State sophomore right-hander Gavin Kuzniewski (6-3) took the loss, pitching 7.2 innings while striking out six batters to just one hit. Right-handed closer Ryan Zamora pitched the final 1.1 innings for Ohio State, allowing one hit while striking out four.
As a whole, Ohio State’s pitching staff was much improved in 2026, as the Buckeyes’ staff jumped from a 9.62 ERA last season to 5.31 in 2026.

Michigan freshman pitcher Shane Brinham (6-4) was dominant for the Wolverines. The left-hander pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out 11 batters.

Third baseman Maddix Simpson led Ohio State with two hits on the day. Second baseman Lee Ellis had a team-high two walks for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State finished the season 30-25, the program’s best record since the 2023 season (31-25), improving upon its 2025 record by 17 more wins.

The Buckeyes also finished sixth in the conference with an 18-12 record, Ohio State’s best winning percentage (.600) in Big Ten play since finishing 15-9 (6.25) in 2016.
