Baseball: Bowling Green Snaps Ohio State’s Seven-Game Win Streak With 9-3 Victory

Bowling Green (12-17, 7-8 MAC) cut Ohio State’s seven-game winning streak short on Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium, defeating the Buckeyes 9-3 after a six-run first inning.
Bowling Green got off a hot start after center fielder Carter Mottice sent a lead-off triple to right-center field and second baseman Sam Seidel singled between first and second to score Mottice and give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
After Bowling Green loaded the bases, first baseman Anthony Mitta walked to score Seidel. Then, junior infielder Vinny Salvione hit a single through the left side to score catcher Andrew DiLodovico and designated hitter Lance Vickers, extending the Falcons’ lead to four.
Right fielder Alex Laird loaded the bases again with a single to right field. Then Salvione and Mitta both scored on a throwing error from Ohio State catcher Grant Mangrum, giving Bowling Green a 6-0 advantage.
The Falcons added another run in the top of the second after Seidel reached on a fielding error and DiLodovico singled through the right side to extend Bowling Green’s lead to seven.
Ohio State left fielder Alex Bemis answered in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to cut the lead to six, though Bowling Green would immediately answer in the top of the fourth. The long ball marked Bemis’ team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Following a Seidel double, the second baseman stole third. DiLodovico then sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Seidel, increasing the Falcons’ edge back to seven.
Ohio State answered in the bottom of the inning as center fielder Miles Vandenheuvel sent a two-run bomb over the left field fence to cut Bowling Green’s advantage to 8-3.
Four scoreless innings later and Seidel added an insurance home run in the top of the ninth to extend Bowling Green’s advantage back to six.
Three strikeouts in four Ohio State batters in the bottom of the ninth ultimately sealed Bowling Green’s 9-3 victory over the Buckeyes.
Vandenheuvel led Ohio State with two hits and two RBIs on the outing, while right fielder Noah Furcht drew two walks.
Bowling Green’s Seidel led all hitters with three hits and four runs scored, while adding two RBIs.
Buckeye graduate right-hander Ryan Butler (0-1) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits in 0.1 innings.
Ohio State junior righty Lincoln McVicker allowed no earned runs and just one hit versus three strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched, while graduate Zach Weber gave up one hit to one strikeout in 2.0 innings thrown.
